Had at wonderful time with David Hooper at the Final Frontier for the May 4th Free Comic Book Festival. We were lucky that the weather held out, we had a bit of a wind resulting in our chasing a drawing, but the sun did show itself thankfully. Here are some of my sketches from the two days, very rough and quick. The last photo is the first in a line of portraits I did throughout the day but sadly the only one I remembered to photograph.
Had some fun today messing around and digitally colouring this little sketch.
Diana’s April Challenge
A bit of a random but fun one with an attempt at digital colouring for a change. :)
I had a go at rendering the digital teddy a little more. As I said before, the light changed as it slowly got darker towards evening, that’s why the long shadows. My favourite bits are the eyes, the nose, and the green patches of fabric. Anyway, I think that considering this is one of my first digital drawings, I feel a right to say that this is as far as I am prepared to go with this drawing.
A weekend in Nottingham.
This, my dear friends, is my second digital drawing and definitely a major step up from the first, again drawing directly from life (I was taking all day and the light kept changing over time). I learned to zoom in to draw in more detail and that I can draw a rough sketch on a separate layer from which I can work. I’m still not done with this one but I wanted to post it at this stage as I quite like the flatness of it. Next, I’ll try to render it more and make it more realistic. I’ll see what I can do. But, before that, please meet one of my childhood teddys, Snow. :)
Note: I’m actually using bright colours ;)
I wanted to show you all this because it is my first ever digital drawing (well, I did one once, maybe 6 years ago in pixels and with a mouse of a girl in a red dress). But, as my dad has an ipad thingimijig, I thought I’d mess around and see what I can do. I had done a couple of sketches on it before but none turned out very well so the Pepsi bottle was a major improvement. I love that it is touch screen and I can draw with my finger instead of using a mouse or pad thing whatever it is called (you can tell I am not very good at these things). Anyway, I wish it came with a little pen as I know some do and now I want a touch screen laptop with which I can draw like this, directly from life onto the screen.
Diana’s image for the March challenge. Dryads.
This image was very much inspired by a friend of mine with a baby on the way. I’m very pleased with the outcome even though the baby was very difficult to draw (a little prayer did help).
After having two friends fervently and passionately convey their feelings that my illustration of The Princess in the Suit of Leather was muddy, I attempted a colour retouch to dispense with much of the brownness of the original. I’m not convinced so please let me know what you all think. :)
Inspired by ‘The Princess in the Suit of Leather’ from Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales.
I have to say that this painting was going rather badly at one point… I was even considering printing out the linework scan and starting all over again…. then after a prayer to God for help, it found new life and turned out better than I could have imagined. How do you tell people that you owe your drawing/art to God? Personally, I like that God is my muse.
Inspired by ‘The Princess in the Suit of Leather’ from Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales.
This drawing was started purely out of the pleasure for Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales (a collection of fairy tales from around the world translated into English). This Egyptian tale is one of my favourites. It is of a princess who escapes from becoming her father’s new wife by disguising herself in a suit of leather and travelling to another kingdom.
I didn’t really think much while drawing it, hence the girl looking over her left shoulder with curtains as the background. ;)
Anyway, I quite enjoy my drawing at line state and often feel I need to document this level out of fear of my ruining it as it progresses.
Because I have absolutely no patience whatsoever, here is a little sneaky peek at a recent drawing done for a friend. I don’t believe it has been views yet so this thumbnail won’t give too much away except that, as per usual, there is a girl in it.
Next week, I hope to post the line work done with my trusty dip pen.
